Brush tip 2 shape I have tried to raise these beautiful little flowers for years...finally decided to "raise" them here!!

1.  Start with a 400 x 400 white canvas.  Using the path tool, select the brush tip 2 shape, any color right now, make the shape 41w x 128 h.

2. Click the path edit button - push the two bottom nodes close together, and pull the two side shapes out slightly.  Make sure you are in non-free edit mode and that your side node handles are straight up as shown.  Click out of edit mode.
Filled shape

After burn tool

After blurred and bristle smear

3 a.  Fill your shape with a reddish purple (magenta-Hex # B92F90).  Right click and convert to an image.

b.  Using the burn tool at size 20, Level 65 and soft edge 50, burn the edges all around, plus lower the size to about 5 and burn right up the middle. Go over the middle stripe 2 or 3 times.

c.  Using the blur tool, size 20, level 5, go over the sides and middle.  Then using bristle smear tool, at default settings, go lightly over the whole thing.

Rotate freely with crosshairs at bottom of petal

4 a.  Using the transform tool, click on rotate freely and make sure the crosshair is at the bottom of the petal.  Set the rotate at 75 degrees.

b.  Copy/rotate 4 times - select all and group.  You should have a finished product similar to mine.  Drag your flower off the canvas onto its own canvas. We need room to work with the next set!

5.  Back on the original canvas, take your path tool, eclipse, color #FDF6EC (a cream color) and make an oval 46w x 47h.  Edit path by pulling sides out and rounding the top as shown.

b.  Click out of edit mode.  Using the paint tool, size 5, transparency 0 and soft edge 50, white, click on Edit/Creative/Paint on edges.  Now, using the eyedrop tool, click on the deepest purple of your first set (should be around Hex #7B023F) Using the bristle brush, size 20, color the bottom of the new petal to about 1/3 way up.

6.  Using the bristle smear tool, same setting as above, lightly pull the purple color UP into the cream, THEN lightly pull the cream down into the purple.   We still only want about 1/3 of the bottom in purple color.

b.  Now using the burn tool, size 12, level 65, burn the bottom of the petal, and again lightly with the bristle smear.

7.  Using the burn tool again, same settings, burn just below the top edge of your petal. Blur this slightly.

b.  Now use the dodge tool at size 10, level 58 on the upper edge above your burn.  Use the bristle smear to drag the darker into the upper edge.

8.  Using the transform tool, as above, again copy and rotate your petal at 75 degrees four times.  Right click, select all, merge into single object.

b.  Using the airbrush tool, size 10, Hex #7B023F, color in light spots in middle of floweret.  Burn middle until uniform color.

c.  Resize your newest floweret at 75% of original size.  Bring your first set of flowerets over to this canvas, place behind your newer set.  Rotate the top set about 15 degrees either left or right.  This offsets the top petals from the bottom petals.  Select the top set and add a shadow; 5th box from right, default settings.

9.  Using the Line/Spline tool, 2D, bright yellow, size 1, draw in some wavy yellow lines in the middle of the top petals.  These are our stamens.  Let them go in all directions.

b. Using the path tool, eclipse, make a small 3D oval 3w x 6h.  Now, duplicate this as many times as stamens you have drawn and place one at the end of each stem.

10.  Using your Layer Manager, select all your stamen pieces, right click, merge into a single object.

Duplicate this piece, resize by clicking Format/Image Size, make sure you have "Selected Object" radio button at the top right clicked, and resize 75%.  Now click your Brightness/Contrast, click the TOP 3rd button TWICE. Arrange this piece over the first batch.  This gives a feeling of more stamens that will show better than what we could have drawn.  If you want, you can burn selected stamens at a very low size so that you don't end up burning the whole bunch.

11. Next, we need to add the two narrow petals that are nearly stem-like in size (I don't what what its called...a beard??? LOL)  Use your path tool to make an eclipse in the magenta color of the outer petals - Hex #B41B7E 2D 8h x 35w.

b.  Go to edit path.  Drag the bottom node way down and pull the handle as shown.  Pull the sides out slightly and the upper handles for each straight up.  Click out of edit mode.

c. Using the transform tool, stretch your shape so that it is 20w x 138h.

12.  Using your burn tool, size 10, burn the right side only.  Then, using the dodge tool (settings we used earlier) to dodge the bottom tip.

Now use the transform tool on perspective and narrow the top.

13.  Add your "beard" pieces to the bottom, rotating them 15 degrees either way as shown.  Send to back (right click, arrange, send to back).  Right click, select all pieces, merge as single object.  Use your transform tool to resize this to about 128 x 146.

14.  Making the stems:  use the Line/Spline tool, size 2.  For the color, I used gradients as shown here.  Use the side to side arrow for the shading.

Draw your stem from middle of the flower to any point down for the length.

16.  Leaf - now those of you who have raised these may laugh at me; I drew my columbines from my plant order catalogue and the leaves were not visible!! So I improvised...I used Path Shape Leaf 7, same gradient as the stem.  I also burned the darker side just a bit.  Scatter leaves through out your bouquet  -  duplicate your flowers, add more stems, stick some leaves in there and you're good to go!
Here's my finished bunch of Columbines. I only wish they were real!

You can use different colors; most are two toned, but I also see them in two tones of yellow...gorgeous!!!

I hope your columbines are bright and cheerful....and I hope you enjoyed this tut!

When you have completed your Columbines, you may download and save this award to your own hard drive.  It is offered on the honor system.  Do NOT link back to the award!!!

Thanks!
