Level: Intermediate/Advanced
Tools: Path shapes; edit path; Paintbrush; Bristle brush; Oil brush;
Transform tool; Airbrush; Blur; Dodge; Burn
Additional files needed: None |
Joined circles
shape |
The face
1. Begin by opening a
white canvass, 400x250. Using the Path tool select Joined Circles
shape, 2D, 310 wide by 190 length. Use a flesh color; I used
Hex #FDEED2. |
Edit mode |
2. Go into edit path. Pull the top
node up level with the other top nodes, pull transform handles so they are
even and straight. Go out of edit mode. Go to a white place on
your canvass to make your eye. |
Edited eye
shape |
The Eye
3. Using the path shape
tool again, this time make an eclipse shape, 2D, same color as the
"face", 66 wide by 38 high. Go into edit mode again; pull the
right hand mode out and slightly down for the tear duct. Pull the left
mode out slightly and make just a tad bit rounder (you can adjust to your
own liking) Go back to path mode. |
Paint on edges |
4. Using the paint brush, size 4, no
transparency, hex #C8BCA6. Go to Effects/Creative/Paint on Edges.
This is to help you "see" the outline of the eye for now. |
White of eye
Blurred
Additional color
|
5a. Select your oil brush, size 15
(default the rest of the settings) hex #FFF9F5. Zoom in 300% while
working on this. Make sure the eye part is selected and paint in the white
of the eye. Do not go all the way to the edge of the left and right
hand sides. Try to keep the shape oval, rounded sides.
5b.
Using the blur tool size 9 level 5, blur the edges of the white into
the color on the sides. Don't worry if you get a bit of the outline;
we'll be fixing that in a minute.
5c. Take your oil brush again, size 6, Hex #FFE4D5, paint in
a bit of color on the left and right hand sides. Blur again, VERY
gently. |
Making the
iris Brush panel settings
Painting the iris
blending the two colors
|
The Iris and pupil
6a. Here
comes the amazing part!! Take the path tool, 2D, color gray (for
now) and circle, make your shape 31x31. Right click, convert to
object.
6b. Now, take the oil brush, hex#C1E2F3, size 6, transparency 75.
On your brush panel, click on color, select two color (see example) with
settings at 3/6/9
6c. Brush your color on from MIDDLE to outside edge of the circle.
If it is a bit dark, go from outside to middle. Continue to paint the
LOWER half of the eye.
6d. Switch the color to Hex#7D8695, same brush settings, and
paint in the upper half, using the same strokes.
6e. Using the blur tool, level 2, TAP the line separating
the two colors so they blend slightly. |
outlining the
iris warping in iris lines
|
7a. Using the same color as the upper
eye, Paint brush, size 4 - 6 (you can choose), go to
Effects/Creative/Paint on Edges. 7b. Take the warp tool, default
settings, size 1, brush from outside edge to middle (make sure the iris
is still selected). This is the
iris lines we're putting in. Do all the way around. |
adding the
pupil adding light reflection
|
8a. Using the paintbrush, black color,
size 3, tap in your pupil. Don't worry about making it perfectly
round shape. My pupil has about 4 "taps" close together. You may
find you need to tap each spot several times. 8b. Using the paintbrush
with size 2, Hex#C1E2F3, tap a spot just on the edge of the pupil, close
to the darker part. This is a light reflection. If you wish, you
can tap a couple more down in the light part. |
defining the eye
outline |
9. Still using paintbrush, this time size
3 and Hex #B0A692, go to Effects/Creative/Paint on edges and do this 2 times
on the eye outline shape. Move the eye into place on the face. |
Adding the
eyeliner Making lashes
Blurring the lashes/liner
|
Now, lets give her some lush lashes
10a. . Use the bristle brush, size 4, PAINT IN MODE, Hex
#252120. Carefully paint around the eye edges - this is the
eyeliner.
10b. To make the lashes, and still using the bristle brush, I
darkened the upper lash line a bit, then painted lash by lash, starting at
the lash line and curving up (just like putting on mascara, girls!!) Try NOT
to make them too thick, too long, or too smeared (this is NOT Tammy Faye
Baker...LOL) Lower line lashes are shorter and more compact. If
you over do, get some too long, etc, remember there is an erase button next
to mode....HANDY!! Just don't' forget to click it off when returning to
mode.
10c. Take your blur tool, size 9, level 2 and TAP the lines
and lashes. Do not overdo this.
|
Eyes in place |
Putting the eyes in place
11.
Before we do the next step, select one of the original eye shapes, duplicate
and move to its own canvass. We'll be needing that later.
Now, select all eye parts and group. Duplicate your group, then use
the transform tool to flip horizontally and then move eyes into
place. Don't get them too close together. |
Editing the
path shape for brows
Painted brows |
The brows
12a Lets make some eye
brows (unlike Whoopy Goldberg, we DO want some definition to our face :-)
Using the path tool, eclipse again, 2D make shape 90x10. Go to
edit path, pull the top mode up and to the left slightly. Pull the
left mode out, the bottom mode up. Use the transform tools to curve
the shape into the eyebrow shape. Right click, convert to object.
12b. Using the bristle brush, color panel settings again on 2 color
with settings at 3/6/9, Hex #A47667, brush size 10, add the color to the
brow. If you wish, you can go up to the color panel and go up a few
shades and run the bristle brush again ONCE over the brow, then use the
bristle smear once over it to blend.
Use the burn tool, size 8, level 70 on the lower edge. Use
the bristle smear again (size 20) and run over the shapes twice.
12c. Duplicate this piece, flip horizontally and place above the eyes.
Do not merge eyes/brows with face yet! |
Shading
placement Blended shading
|
Shading
13a. We need to do some
shading to keep the face from looking flat. Select the face only.
Using the airbrush, size 20, Hex#DECABE, with a transparency of
about 35, brush around the inside of the eyes area (try to imagine the
nose in that area), and on the outside corners of the eye. Don't try
to be exact; as long as the eyes and brows are not selected, you can't paint
on them.
13b. Using the blur tool size 20, level 5, blur and blend
the shadows into the eye socket area. |
| |
14. Select the face part again, with the
pick tool, click soft edge on the attributes bar; give it a soft edge of
30. Now, select both the face and the brows; do not merge! Group
if you wish; duplicate and move this copy to its own canvass (same size as
the one we're using.) |
Coloring the
eye lid
completed lid with lashes |
The eyelid
15a. Remember the copy of
the eye shape we duplicated??? Lets select that now, move onto the canvass
with the face copy. Using the oil brush, size 9, hex#B3848A (or
you can use another color of your choosing here!) color in the lid.
Take the dodge tool, size 20, level 65 and tap three spots of
highlight in the center of the lid. Use your blur tool to blend it
all.
15b. Using the bristle brush, size 4, hex #4F483E, paint
in mode, darken the lower edge of the lid. Again, make the lashes
(and curve them slightly). Remember that lashes are longer in the
center, shorter towards the inside edge. Once complete, still in
mode, take the blur tool, gentle blur the line and tap the lashes to
make them softer. Come out of mode.

Blurring lids

|
Pulling the two together
16a.
Select all on the copy; group if you need to. Move over to place
EXACTLY over the original. Go to transparency again, set at 35,
and if you grouped the copy set, ungroup. Using the pick tool, move
the eyes and brows into place exactly over the original. Once in
place, go back to no transparency and merge all the copy as a single object.
Move back to its own canvass.
16b. Using your blur tool, level 5 and size about 8,
carefully blur the upper edges of the lid into the face. Take care NOT
to get too close to your brows. Save this as eyes1 to your
desktop. Go back to the original, select all and merge as single
object. Save as eyes2 on the deskop. We're now ready to
animate! |
| |
Animation 17. Go into GA5 and use
the Animation Wizard. Add your two images and use the setting as is.
Click finish. Inside GA, click the open eyes frame, right click,
frame properties, and set at 100. Leave the closed eyes at 25.
Click on preview - if happy with the animation, click back on edit. If
not satisfied, play a bit with the frame properties. Once done, go to
File, Optimation Wizard. Click on the optimization preset button, then
Photo 128. This makes the animation less large without
compromising the quality of the picture. When the window comes up,
click on preview to see how it looks. If that's ok, click ok then SAVE
AS. Name your animation, then click ok. |

There you have it!!! They almost look
real, don't they???
I'd LOVE to see what you come up with; you can change the eye color
(when doing the two shades of the same color, just use the color panel and
go to a light shade and dark shade of your chosen eye color), change the
brow/lash color, eye shadow....Enjoy yourself!!
Here's looking at you!!!

These lovely shades of green eyes were
done by my dear friend Jeaney, from FSG. I love the unusual color!!
Thanks Jeaney, sweetie!! |
