Native American Peace Pipe

Level:  Intermediate

Tools Used: Path tools, Path Edit tool, Blur/Burn, Line/Spline tool, Bristle brush in mode painting

Additional files: trims (download my beads and prepared feathers UFO file here - optional); Rosie's Woods 6 (Rosewood) optional  Go to Rosie's site for her presets download Woods 6.

1. Start by opening a white canvas 400 wide by 300 long.  Using the path tools, make a 2D grey rounded rectangle 260 wide by 20 length.

2.  Go into Path Edit mode.  Select the - in the edit point bar and click the hidden modes in each end.  This will leave your shape slightly straight on both end.  Then,  selecting the edit point click the nodes to pull out the transform handles so each end is slightly narrower and rounded. Click out of edit mode.

3. With the shape still selected, go to the Transform tool, Perspective, and narrow the left side slightly.  Next, using the path tool's rounded rectangle again, make another shape 20 x 30; widen the bottom of this shape with the transform tool perspective again, widening the bottom of the shape to approximately 24.

Now we can add our fill.  This pipe is made from clay, but I've used Rosie's Rosewood from her Woods 6 collection.  You can use other fills if you want; just remember, however, that the wood fill should be rather dark.  Using this fill will cause the shapes to become 3D.  Leave the border/depth settings as they are unless a very low number; change the border to 20 if this happens.  Fill both shapes.  Select the smaller shape, arrange on top of the left hand side as shown, then send to back.  Right click, select all objects, merge as a single object.

4.  While still selected, use the Blur tool at the default settings to blend in the bowl of the pipe and then use along the edges of the pipe itself (I think this gives it a more clay look).  You can also use the Burn tool at its default settings to darken the bottom and the right side of the bowl, then blur gently.

Next, use the erase tool at the default settings, straight lines, and clip off the ends of the pipe so that they are not quite as rounded. You won't need to clip off much (see example)

5.  Using the path tool, eclipse, black 2D, make a very small shape 8 x 3 and position at the top of the bowl.  Right click, select all objects, merge as a single object.  Using the blur tool, TAP slightly over the eclipse.  We don't want to completely blur it out.

6.  Deselect your pipe.  Using the path tools, again 2D grey, select Plaque 6 and draw your shape 126 wide x 36 length.  I used the center horizontally but found it didn't center correctly, so after you do that, use your arrow key on the plaque shape to move it down more centrally.

Right click the plaque shape, convert object type, from path to image.  Keep the plaque shape selected.  This is the animal hide used for decoration.

7.  Here's the creative part!!!

Using the bristle brush, Hex #7C7C7C, brush size 22, Preset pepper dots (you will have to set your color AFTER selecting the preset), open the panel and go to color.  Select the 2 color button and use the settings shown in the example.  Also, click "in mode" on the attributes bar.  Begin tapping the color onto your plaque; make sure to go a bit OUTSIDE the shape so that it looks fuzzy.

Next, use Hex#B7770D, panel settings at:  Color - 4; Gradient - 8; Brightness/Contrast - 7  and tap this color onto the shape, making sure to use it in spots, not all over.  Next, using Hex # COCOCO, continue to add in color spots.  REMEMBER TO STAY IN MODE!  When you're happy with the color spots you've done, click on Blur and TAP TAP TAP to gentle blend the colors.  You may come out of mode when completed (say "yes" when asked if you wish to come out of mode). Deselect the shape.

8.  Now we're ready to decorate our pipe.  My UFO file contains feathers I have painted from Rosie's feather template, but you may use feathers you have done already, or you can repaint my feathers.  The settings to paint are in the example and down with the Airbrush tool.  I also used the bristle smear tool after wards to gentle blend the colors into the feather.

You will need at least 2 different colored feathers (we can duplicate them.- I used 4 differently painted ones)  Reserve your feathers - we'll need them in a few minutes.

9.  To make the leather ties, go to the Line/Spline tool, 3D, border 2, Hex #855509.  Using the spline tool, start your tie between the bowl and hide, taking care to make the top curved to that it looks like it's wrapped around the pipe, then bring it down slightly curved.  Do this again for a second tie next to the first one.  Click the tie, go to Brightness/Contrast, and click the bottom 3rd button 2 times.

10  Add the beads and feathers:

My UFO file contains beads used, but you can make your own.  I made mine with the rounded rectangle, 3D.  In your panel, under Shape, change the roundness to 77.  I have put 3 colors and a white bead in the file. We'll need to duplicate the white bead 11 times (12 beads total)  You can then duplicate a color of your choice 5 times (6 beads total)  Place the color bead at the top of the leather tie, then right click and send to back.  Add a white bead just below it (keep in front).  Where your ties meet, add another white bead.  Finally, at the end of the tie, add a white, then color, then white bead. Do this on both ties.

Next, select one of your reserved feathers.  Using the transform tool, narrow the feather to no more than 60 wide and no longer than 170 long.  Its best to make various size feathers, since real feathers are not perfectly sized.  Put the first feather at the bottom of the bead on the tie; right click, send to back.  Add your next feather in the same place, but using the transform tool, rotate 10 degrees to the right.  Do these same steps for the other tie, instead rotate to the left to put the second feather in place. For even more interest, you can rotate another 10 degrees if you wish.  Finally, duplicate one of the feathers (in contrasting color) and size to 20 x 50.  Put over the other feathers on one tie (doesn't matter which set).  Click the white bead above it and right click, bring to front.

To make your feathers look less flat, select the upper top ones (I have 2 feathers on each tie) and add a shadow with the settings in the example.

  11.  Do steps 9 - 10 again on the other side of the hide for ties on the right side.
12.  Right click, select all objects, merge as a single object.  And there you have it, an authentic looking peace pipe!
