Eye - another way
This tut is converted from a
PhotoShop tut written by Czarinaqueen at
Renderocity and resembles my Animated Eyes tut with a few subtle differences...I
liked them so much, I decided to write it for Photo Impact.
 |
Version: 8
Level: Intermediate
Tools: Path Tools, Eraser, Paint,
Burn, Dodge, Warp, Bristle brush, Bristle Smear, Blur
Additional Files: None needed |
 |
1. Start with a 300 x 300
white canvas. Since we are working in layers, using the Path
Tool rectangle, make your shape 295 x 295. This nearly
fills the canvas, but we don't want it filled all the way. Right
click and convert to an object. |

 |
2. a. Using the eraser tool,
while your rectangle is still selected, size 10, erase out your eye
shape. Make sure the inner corner has the little rounded shape, much
like the corner of your own eye.
b. While the rectangle is still selected,
right click and duplicate your shape. Then, go to
Format/Invert. This turn the duplicated rectangle black.
Take your paint brush, size 20, paint IN MODE, color #F9FAFF (a
very VERY pale blue; we don't want a complete white) and paint over the
eye shape. Make sure to paint OUTSIDE the edges of the erased shape.
Its ok if it's not perfect; it will be hidden by the skin rectangle.
c. Now, select your black rectangle and
delete (yes delete; we no longer need this template). Select
your near white eye shape and right click, arrange, send to back.
It should now be behind your "skin". |
 |
3. With the "skin" layer
selected, use your burn tool in size 30, level 70 and burn the
edges and out of the cut out eye. Make sure to use it mostly around
the edges of the cut out. Then Blur size 20, level 5 as
shown. |

 |
4 a. Select your eye shape
behind the skin. Using the paint brush, size 10, a pale
pink/peach (my color here is #FFCBC9) and carefully paint in the
corners. Make SURE to keep the white rounded looking!
b. Using the burn tool (as size, etc,
as above) and burn the very corners. Then use the blur tool to
blur into the white (do not blur so that the white turns all pink,
just enough to blend in) |

|
5. The fun part!!! Choose what
color you want your iris to be. Using the paint brush, size about
60 (we want it to extend behind the skin), put the curser right in the
middle of the white, and click about 5-6 times. Make sure NOT
to move your mouse...we want it to stay in the same place. The color
I'm using here is #0000C4. b. Now,
using the burn tool, size 20, burn between the outer edge and
middle of the eye. I put more burn on the top of the eye, since its
shadowed by your lashes.
c. Next, take the Dodge tool, size 25,
level 80, again put right the middle of the eye and click until the
circle of your curser is filled. |

 |
6. Now take the warp tool,
size 5 (zoom in 200% for this part) and pull from the middle of the
eye to the outer edge (but do NOT go beyond your iris) Do this all
around, using the contour of the eye. Then start at the outer edge
and drag in the darker color into the lighter middle.
b. Using your paint tool again, size 20,
black, put right in the middle of the lighter part of the eye and
click 4 times. This is our pupil. Looking good, isn't it?? |

 |
7. Now to make the
lashes...this may seem a bit silly, but it definitely works better this
way. Select your skin, take your paint brush, size 7, black and
paint IN MODE. Outline the eye, but do not go all the way
around. Leave some open, as shown. You may even want to
stop just past the iris on the bottom lid. Blur
this slightly. Now, select the liner and the skin and merge into a
single object. You may want to blur again, gently and at a lower
level. b. Using the warp tool,
size 7, pull from the black liner and up, curving slightly. This
is what makes the soft eyelashes. Continue doing this across the
top, making them shorter at the inside corner. Make them as full as
you wish, but try not to over do it, nor make them too long (unless you
are going for that Vegas Showgirl look!!) ;-)
C. Make sure to use your blur tool
when done at a low level and smaller size along the black line (not in the
lashes) to blur gently. |

 |
8.
The brows; Using the bristle brush, size 14, preset of
grass, color #772B1A, paint in MODE and shape your brow as shown.
b. Then change to size 10, color #B7770D
and using upward short strokes brush in the lighter color. Do not overdo
this.
c. Merge the brow with the "skin".
Using the bristle smear tool, lightly brush across the brow.
|
 |
9. Using your burn tool,
size about 6, level 4 or 5, burn slightly at the bottom of your brow.
Blur very lightly. Now take the Dodge
tool, size about 5 or 6, and dodge very lightly at the top of the
brow. You can take the bristle smear tool to this, then blur very
very lightly.
If you find stray hairs, you can "tweeze" them
out by blurring into the skin :-) No pain!!
|
 |
10. Select your eye - Using
the paint tool size 7, white, transparency of 50, put the curser
just off to one side of the pupil in the iris of the eye and tap about
5 times. Now change to size 10, put at the upper edge of
the pupil and tap 2x. |
 |
I finished up with adding a bit more
shading along the "nose" and under the eye area. You may not have to
do this. I also (before merging all) took the eraser and erased that
teeny bit of black lower liner that was too much into the white close to
the corner.
When satisfied, merge all. You can then cut
the excess white off the outside edges of your "skin"
