Simple Slats

Simple Slat Graphic Level - Beginner

Tools used:  Path tool, Line and Spline tool, Edit Trace, Button Designer

Other needed:  photo, or other graphic

  1.  Open your graphic or photo you wish to slat; copy to clipboard, close the picture after.  You won't be needing it again.
  2.  Next, open a new canvass, 400x400, white.

3.  Using the path tool, rectangle (or another shape if you wish; I used the heart shape above, but will use rectangle for this tut), 2 D black.  Make your shape

382 wide x 382.length.

Using the pick tool, go to align and center both.

4.  Using the line and spline tool, white, 2D, border 1, make lines through your shape, making sure to go beyond the shape into your white background.  Also, don't make so many that your slats are itsy bitsy...it will make your image too chopped up looking.     Don't worry too much about getting them evenly spaced; we're going to fix that in a minute!
5.  In the layer manager, select all your white lines.  Right click align, top, then right click align, space evenly, and make sure you use horizontal for direction.
6.  Select all objects, merge as single object, then merge all.  Go to Edit, Trace, image and leave all settings as is.
7.  Go out of horizontal deform to 3-D, change color to white, and set your border to 1 for now.  Your square will NOT look raised like the sample - so don't panic!!!
8.  Now, go to Edit, Paste, Into selection AND...do not let go of your mouse button until you have your picture placed exactly as you want it.  Looking like something now, isn't it??
9.  Now, go to Web, Button Designer, Any shape, and use the settings here:

1st selection of buttons at bottom, 1st row, change bevel to 4, smoothness to 1, light elevation to 55 (you can change to your own liking on this one) and light angle to 143 or so.  Then click OK

10.  The slats look like they are missing something; lets add shadow.  I used the settings here - you can experiment.
11.  And you're finished!!!  If you think your slats are too thick, you can use a lower setting on the Button Designer on bevel.
